THE NEW F-GAS REGULATION AND IMPACT

ON REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT

The European phase-down of HFCs begins in

2015, with the introduction of the new F-gas

regulation which will see their use reduced

to 21% of average levels between 2009 and

2011 by 2030. Further legislation will restrict

and ban the use of refrigerant gases in certain

applications.

While they can still be used, R404A and R507

gases will no longer be the F-gases of choice

in refrigeration, as they will have a Global

Warming Potential of more than 2,500. A ban

on servicing these systems is coming in 2020.

Some commercial refrigeration systems with

a design capacity of more than 40kW are also

now banned. Read more4

Daikin's CVP and ZEAS refrigeration systems can

still be specified with confidence as they use

R410A. This has a GWP of less than 2,500 and is

highly efficient in low and medium temperature

applications.

ESKIMO CASE STUDY

Four Daikin ZEAS condensing units have solved a sticky problem

at Eskimo Ice's Crawley factory, which produces up to 200 tons

of ice cubes a day for customers in the UK, Ireland and Belgium.

Previously, wet ice cubes blocked conveyors and machines.

The 20hp ZEAS units, based on Daikin's energy-efficient VRV

technology, provide the power to cool the 750kg of ice cubes

made every five minutes down to -15oC.

However, the new ZEAS solution ensures they stay dry and

don't stick together during the automated packing process.

Owner Gavin Marks says: "With the ZEAS units, our cubes slide

smoothly through the process."
